Mind, body and me

What are you?

When you hear this question you might think I am crazy but have you actually asked yourself this question. People think that the above question is usually asked when others think that you behave like an animal. Even when you read this question before the thought that passed your mind would be something similar. But this time when I'm asking you this question think differently.

What are you?

Human being. So you are a human. I know that these words describe our spicies. That it is the biological term given to your body's structure. But does it mean that you are your body??

The question might seem stupid. But give me the actual answer to that question. If we are our  body then how come we don't lose ourselves each time we lose a body part. We don't die if someone cuts off our legs. It's going to give you a hell lot of a pain but you don't die. Maybe that concept was a bit rough. Let's take another example.

How do you move your hands? First we see the need. We use our eyes for this. The eyes then send a visual signal to the brain. The brain analyses this signal. Then sends a signal to the muscles in our hands so as to move them.

In the above description we can see how our body and brain work. But there is a crucial element missing- the wish to move our hand. Where did it come from. Did it come from our brain. Maybe it did. So can we say that our brain is who we are.

Our body contains a lot of involuntary and voluntary functions. Our brain is what controls these functions. Our brain can control activities like heart beat, breathing, digestion etc. If we are the brain why can't we control these functions. We can't wish to stop our heart or start our digestion processes. And we can merely control our sudden reflexes.

No, I don't think we are the brain. Maybe it's the mind. I make all my decisions there. Don't I? But even our mind goes out of our control. Mind is like a third person that talks to you when you think. If we are not our mind then what and where are we.

This is a hard question. We are actually the  energy that exists in our body. It's everywhere but yet nowhere. This is the same reason why we say the terms 'our body' or 'our mind'. This is because these are not you but yours.

If this is confusing to understand here is an easier explanation: our mind is like a smart TV. You see in it what you want to see and what it wants you to see. Your brain however is the processor in a computer. It's connected to all the inputs and outputs. And our body is a collection of all these components. Whereas we sit in front of our TV and control what we want.

Now answer the question, What are you??
